Kurobe Gorge

The Kurobe Gorge cuts through the spectacular mountain scenery of the Northern Japanese Alps. Its river flows out into the Toyama Bay in northern Japan. The narrow gauge railway makes a great way to enjoy all that the gorge has to offer.

Most of the train carriages are open at the sides letting you feel the passing breeze, and it brings nature almost within hand’s reach. The railway starts at the spa town of Unazuki Onsen and follows the river tightly into the gorge. It leads to the hot springs at Kanetsuri, onsen baths, and a couple of hiking trails. It takes about an hour and a half to reach the railway’s end.

Sections of the railway are under repair following earthquake damage at the beginning of 2024.
