The Fortress City of Galle

The fortress city of Galle was established by the Portuguese in the 16th century. It was significantly extended and strengthened by the Dutch in the 18th century.
Sunset from the fortress city of Galle is quite a sight. Locals take their evening stroll along the old fortress walls with the mist rising from the sea. Families picnic on the palm-tree flanked open green while children fly their kites.

The network of streets that make up the fortress city of Galle are home to many examples of well-restored colonial buildings. Most shops and restaurants are aimed at the many visitors that come and there are plenty of quality guesthouses to choose from. It is great place to spend a few relaxing days.

The train journey from Colombo to Galle is direct and follows the east coast of Sri Lanka. During the summer months, the sea in that area can be wild and with the interspersed inlets leading to mangroves; it makes for a very picturesque journey. The railway network in Sri Lanka is extensive, but journeys are not always direct and separate bookings are needed for each leg of the trip.
