Big Almaty Lake

Big Almaty Lake is a short distance from the city and a wonderful way to spend some time in the mountains and countryside of Kazakhstan. The lake is in a military zone so wandering off is not really a good option. The lake is close to the border with Kyrgyzstan and guards patrol the area. The views are spectacular but access to the lake is also prohibited. However, it’s a short drive to some wonderful pathways and rivers which are not restricted.

The easiest way to get to Big Almaty Lake is with a local tour. This usually includes a stop at the trails leading to Butakovsky Waterfall and is a good opportunity to explore some of the more accessible countryside. You’re likely to see roaming horses and a range of bird life, including vultures.
