Mompox – A Step back in Time

The bus journey from Santa Marta to Mompox took three hours longer than expected. We left at 14:30 and finally got in at 22.30. The second-half of the journey was a bumpy road with no tarmac and plenty of potholes. After sundown, on three occasions we virtually slowed to halt as cowboys driving herds of cattle passed us engulfing the bus. We were clearly in the back of beyond!

Walking around the town of Mompox is a step back in time. Founded in 1540 as an inland port, Mompox played a major role in the early colonisation of Colombia. The historical centre is home to excellent examples of Spanish colonial properties mostly from the 17th to 19th century. I had the delight of staying in a very comfortable and stately colonial house, the Hotel Doña Manuela.

The town has a very relaxed vibe. It’s a great place to enjoy well-preserved and traditional Spanish architecture, and magnificent birdlife.

The only thing that looks out of place down the main streets are vehicles and electricity cables. Otherwise, it’s probably remained unchanged for hundreds of years:

The magnificent properties in Mompox continue alongside the river and make a great place for an evening stroll. A few basic restaurants take advantage of the riverside setting.

The river leads out into the wetlands and makes for excellent birdwatching – kingfishers, herons, falcons, canaries and cuckoos galore! From where you are staying, or in town, it’s easy to organise a boat trip.
