Oaxaca
The Way to Oaxaca

Oaxaca (pronounced Wa Haka) is a six-hour bus ride from Mexico City. After leaving the capital, the road begins to take you through rolling countryside. A few of the mountain peaks are still snowy even in the summer.

The City Centre
Much of the city centre retains the charm of well-maintained and colourful colonial Spanish buildings with excellent examples in the central market area of the Zócalo. From many points of the city centre there are ethereal views to the distant mountains.

Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral
Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral is alongside the area of the Zócalo. It dates back almost 500 years, and is an imposing building.

Art and Craft
Oaxaca has a thriving art and craft trade which is well represented by the indoor market area of La Casa de las Artesanias. It has a great variety of cloths and upholstery, including some exceptional handmade carpets with traditional designs.

Culinary Highlights
Oaxaca has the reputation for being one of Mexico’s culinary highlights. There are plenty of high quality restaurants in the city. A real treat is a three-chocolate mole with meat marinated in spiced sauces of white, milk and dark chocolate.

Monte Alban
Another excellent reason to come to Oaxaca is to access the impressive Zapotec archaeological site of Monte Alban. This UNESCO World Heritage site was founded 2500 years ago.
