Trakai Island Castle
Trakai Island Castle is set in the picturesque Galve Lake a short distance from Lithuania’s capital city, Vilnius. The train journey from Vilnius takes just over half an hour, then it’s a forty-minute walk to the castle. The walk will take you around the lakeside shore where there is a colourful array of birdlife.
The castle was built for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in the 14th century. It would be easy to think that it is the original castle. A few small sections of the old walls remain, but what you see is a reconstruction from the 1950s. Nonetheless, it is an impressive sight!
It made a peaceful and interesting day out from Vilnius with plenty of fresh air and few people. The lack of people was probably due to it being just after COVID-19 lockdown!
