Uxmal

While Mexico holds many truly amazing ancient archeological sites, for me Uxmal is the one that has made the biggest impact. As you move around the site, it’s treasures reveal themselves one at a time. The oval Pyramid of the Magician is mesmerising. The site feels peaceful and at the same time strong.

The city state of Uxmal (pronounced Ush-Mall) was founded in the Late Classic Mayan period. It dates back to the 8th century, and at its zenith had a population of around 25000. Much of the hour-and-a-half bus ride from Merida to Uxmal is a picturesque treat. I had to wait for a couple of hours for the return bus, but it arrived eventually.

The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of the Magician are the two most significant buildings on the site.
