Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital city of Lithuania and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is blessed with wonderful examples of opulent baroque architecture as well as one of the largest medieval quarters in Europe. It enjoys the benefits of two rivers, the Neris and the Vilna, which meet in the city centre.

The Grand Duke Gediminas moved the capital city of Lithuania to Vilnius in 1323. He was also responsible for the building of the magnificent Trakai Island Castle. In the last four hundred years, the city has been occupied and influenced by many invading forces including the Russians, the Swedish, the French, the Polish, and the Germans. The dissolution of the USSR in 1991 brought Vilnius independence and freedom.

The Presidential Palace, Gediminas Tower, the colourful University, the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, are all worthwhile visiting. And even when I was there during COVID-19 time, there were plenty of good cafés and restaurants to enjoy.
